The micron requirement in mechanical machining

In the manufacture of high-precision mechanical parts, every detail counts. Grinding is a crucial step in achieving micrometrically fine surface finishes, essential for ultra-tight tolerances and component performance.

Our customer, a company located in the Eure region (27) and heir to UTC's expertise in the field, called on us in 2023 for a major technical challenge: to guarantee a perfectly stable environment in the grinding room. In this room, where cutting-edge machines operate, the slightest variation in temperature or humidity can impact the expansion of materials and, consequently, the final precision of parts.

The objective was therefore clear: to maintain ambient conditions worthy of a metrology room, i.e. a temperature of 20°C (± 1°C) and a relative humidity of 50% (± 5%RH). These parameters are essential for validating part tolerances and ensuring consistent quality, even down to the micron level.

Requirement: Maintain a perfectly stable environment in the grinding room, taking into account size, compactness and energy-saving constraints.

Challenges & Solutions

We therefore designed a tailor-made solution, based on a self-contained precision Air Handling Unit, comprising a reversible Air/Air Heat Pump (AHU) with Free Cooling function on the air. This system is designed for room control in critical applications.

Precise performance

Need for very fine regulation to support machining of micron-sized surfaces.

Solutions:

  1. Rigorous maintenance of 20°C (± 1°C) and 50% RH (± 5%).
  2. 64 kW cooling capacity and 34 kW heating capacity, coupled with a customized control system.
  3. Fresh air treatment, essential for indoor air quality and room pressurization.

Complex integration

Space constrained so as not to impede the movement of vehicles and personnel.

Solutions :

  1. Specific lengthwise layout.
  2. All-in-one air handling unit.
  3. Refrigeration circuit integrated into the air stream.

Energy efficiency

A commitment to integrating energy recovery solutions and minimizing environmental impact.

Solutions:

  1. Use of R454C refrigerant, classified A2L with a very low global warming potential of 148.
  2. Air free-cooling function: when outdoor conditions are favorable (especially at night), ambient cold air is recovered and used for cooling.
  3. Two refrigeration circuits, allowing power levels to be varied according to need.
