Ground Master 200 and 400, French bestsellers from Thalès LAS

The Ground Master (GM) 400 and 200, marketed respectively in 2008 and 2012 by Thalès LAS, are French long-range 3D radar systems, used for surveillance and air defense purposes. These systems fit into a single 20-foot ISO container weighing less than 10 tons. They can be deployed in less than an hour by a small team, either locally or remotely. Their compact, lightweight format and rapid deployment system make them reliable, robust and high-performance radars, capable of being deployed in a variety of demanding environments.

→ Proven in combat, these French systems are sold worldwide every year.

A need for functional ACUs despite severe constraints

CAP2i is proud to have participated in the design of the air-conditioning system. In fact, we prototyped an air handling solution that cools the GM's electronic components while remaining functional despite a number of constraints.

Mechanical stress

acceleration - impact - rolling

Environmental constraints

extreme temperatures (-40°C to 55°C) - salt spray - frost - snow - tornado. Operates in all climates.

Dimensional constraints

compactness - weight limit

Mass production of rugged, plug&play, single-piece ACUs

Service life of 20 to 30 years

Thanks to a welded aluminum structure with reinforcement, qualified on a test table.

All-climate operation

Thanks to a SURTEC 650 treatment, an adapted exterior paint finish, and a cataphoresis treatment for the battery.

Resilience and robustness

Guaranteed thanks to an intelligent control system that manages changeover and complementarities, as well as an emergency machine and a simplified alarm program developed exclusively for GM.

Evolution towards LEAN production

Prototype tested, then qualified and finally validated by Thalès, we set up a new work organization to be able to meet strong customer demand.

→ Objective: Produce 4 air conditioning systems per month for Thalès LAS GMs.

We have therefore moved towards LEAN production, a concept originating from Japanese industry (Toyota) whose overall objective is to be more efficient by eliminating waste (of time, resources, transport, unnecessary movements, etc.). At CAP2i, this meant moving to a larger production site (1500m² in Sartrouville), then organizing our new workshop into islands. This new environment has enabled us to eliminate unnecessary travel by optimizing production space (materials and tools directly available to refrigeration technicians): We've cut the time needed to assemble an air-conditioning cabinet by a factor of 3.

An interesting and ongoing project

Since 2008, we have produced around 400 ACUs, and the project is continuing successfully, with forecasts extending to 2026.

LEAN production is proving effective, and we are delighted to continue working directly with Thalès LAS, for whom we are currently the No. 1 supplier of cooling systems.

Rémi Le Maux

"What they manufacture for our radars are air conditioners. They were among the only suppliers to meet our very strict specifications. CAP2i air-conditioning systems guarantee a perfectly regulated temperature inside our systems. "
