Thalès LAS Ground Fire (GF) 300s, tried and tested worldwide

The Ground Fire (GF) 300 is a multifunction radar capable of detecting and tracking a wide variety of threats, including autonomous ballistic missiles, drones and stealth aircraft. Marketed by Thalès LAS, it is part of the SAMP/T NG (Sol Air Moyenne Portée/Terrestre Nouvelle Génération) system, whose main functions are surveillance and air defense.

→ Popular worldwide, the GF 300 is a highly tactical radar that is easy to transport and maintain.

A complex, technical and customized design

Designing a cooling solution for such a radar is a bit like solving an equation with several unknowns. But thanks to extensive co-design work with all the parties involved, we were able to strike the right balance between performance, reliability and compactness, despite significant constraints.

Dimensional constraints

Limited size and weight (1 meter high and 1500 kg maximum), while taking into account mechanical constraints (rolling, shock, vibration).

Environmental constraints

Operation in any climate (extreme temperatures, frost, snow, tornadoes, etc.), with stringent EMC constraints.

Functional constraints

A resilient, self-contained system that can operate safely and continuously, regardless of external conditions.

A refrigeration unit fully adapted to the GF300

2 years of study, testing and qualification have resulted in the design of a cooling solution that perfectly meets the needs and constraints of the GF300. Here are a few technical features of the cooling unit, which is compact, reliable and high-performance.

Robust and powerful

Using water-cooling technology, this cooling unit generates 50 kW of cooling power, enabling the antenna and cabin to be cooled. Guaranteed operation from -40°C to 55°C, with a glycol preheating system and compact, variable-speed motors for reduced noise and precise temperature control.

Reliable and resilient

Chiller designed to operate safely and continuously, thanks to a simplified alarm system (recognition of the cause of failure to within three parts), managed by a PLC developed exclusively for the GF300, and a "Battle Override" function that enables forced operation. Autonomous chiller thanks to 33% energy redundancy.

Lightweight and compact

Compact refrigeration unit, 1 meter high and weighing less than 1500 kg, thanks to strong, lightweight materials (aluminum) and components precisely sized for the GF300.

An interesting and ongoing project

It took two years of study, testing and qualification to arrive at this finished product. This project is totally in line with CAP2i's mission, which is to design tailor-made air and fluid handling solutions, thanks to a high level of technical expertise and proven experience. Thank you to Thalès LAS and to our suppliers and collaborators for this joint project and this high-quality work.

→ Today, thanks to LEAN-type production and therefore an island organization of our workshop, we are manufacturing this chiller unit in small series, with delivery forecasts running until 2026.
